SOVEREIGNTY
Canada
The name Canada is now generally accepted as originating from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word Kanata or Canada, meaning "village" or "settlement".
Treaties
Indigenous People were the first citizens of Kanata or Canada. They accepted people from Europe, who were refugees, with openness and trust, and entered into Treaty with the same feeling of trust and adoption of other cultures.
Moving Forward
It is time for Canada to recognize all Indigenous People as equals.
TREATIES
AGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE GOVERMENT AND INDIGENOUS GROUPS
Treaties are agreements made between the Government of Canada, Indigenous groups and often provinces and territories that define ongoing rights and obligations on all sides.
These agreements set out continuing treaty rights and benefits for each group.
